BIG BALLS Beech — Pair of Handmade Wooden Camera Handles (60mm Beech, ARRI Rosette)
Premium handcrafted pair of wooden ball camera handles, made in New Zealand. Designed by a cinematographer for cinematographers and camera operators — comfortable, beautiful, and built to last.
NOTE: 60mm sizing is nominal. These are hand made so size can vary +/-2mm
NOTE 2: These European Beech versions are lighter in colour and absorb significantly more oil during finishing than the Padauk ones. As a result, they may show some tooling marks or minor surface blemishes. If you look closely at the product photos, you’ll see a few examples visible on the finished pieces.
Grab your camera by the balls.
Designed and built by me (Hendrikus De Vaan), a working cinematographer who wanted a better solution than the over-engineered, uncomfortable handles on the market.
Each pair is made from solid European Beech hardwood, hand-finished with a traditional oil and homemade paste wax finish for a satin feel that improves with age. The 60 mm diameter sphere fits naturally in your palm, allowing comfortable control from any angle - no more need to adjust the angle of your handles.
Every set is individually made and assembled by me personally, and paired with A2 stainless-steel hardware, copper washers, and Stainless Steel ARRI-standard rosette mounts with M6 bolts for a universal fit and decades of use if cared for. No CNC. No mass production. Just one filmmaker making tools for others.
Key Features
-
Handmade in New Zealand
-
Solid European Beech hardwood — naturally strong; develops a rich patina over time. It's what your grandpa's old woodworking tools were made from.
-
Natural oil + wax finish — no varnish, no plastics. Just tactile, breathable wood. Can be refinished without sanding.
-
Ergonomic 60 mm spheres — fit comfortably in the hand, easing wrist fatigue. (60mm nominal, can vary a few mm due to manual work and variations in the timber)
-
ARRI Rosette + M6 screw — universal compatibility with cinema rigs. (Except for Zacuto - I don't know why they use 1/4-20 on their rosettes?)
-
Built to last — stainless and copper hardware.
Why Ball Handles?
Traditional rosette handles can force fixed angles that strain your wrists. They also require adjustment when going between shoulder, underslung, and other angles.
Ball handles can be grabbed from any angle, letting your grip dictate the position — intuitive and comfortable. When you have the camera shoulder mounted - they rest comfortably in the palms of your hands and discourage the death gripping that sometimes happens with handlebars. I also reckon they look really nice.
Limited Production
Each batch is small, made by me personally, and individually inspected. Stock appears when available — no pre-orders, no dropshipping. I do my best to keep them in stock. If they are listed "in-stock" - it means I have them here, on hand, and ready to ship out.

note: wood colour and grain can vary a lot. I pay special attention to matching pairs of handles based on the visual quality of the grain, as well as weighing them so they are well balanced. There may also be some minor tooling marks present from time to time. This is a hand made product, made from a natural material.
